New insights for Goffert station thanks to Europan design competition

21 January 2008

Europan (www.europan.nl), the international European design competition that challenges young architects to think about the European city, has not resulted in a winner for Nijmegen. There was a special mention in the jury’s report for the plan ‘Sloping Nijmegen’. In total 19 architects enlisted for Nijmegen. The design entries have delivered many new insights in the possibilities for the development area.

For the international design competition the Nijmegen city council and FiftyTwoDegrees had made available the terrain near the railroad tracks that is partially a part of the development area of FiftyTwoDegrees. Participants were asked to make a study of the new multifunctional train station area with apartments, offices and facilities. Further, they were asked to make a design for the station-building and square.

The surroundings of Nijmegen Goffert are to become a new junction in the city region. FiftyTwoDegrees connects the NXP high tech campus with the Goffert park, where the expanded soccer stadium and the new centre for top sports are planned.

All 19 entries for Winkelsteeg are available for visitors from 25 January - 9 March in the Architecture Centre Nijmegen, Ridderstraat 27. for more information check www.architectuurcentrumnijmegen.nl.
